I get questions about domain and self-hosting, do new blogger really need it? My answer is: depends on what you want to achieve with your blog. Sometimes free WordPress.com or Blogger domain can be enough, sometimes it’s best to do it with a self-hosted blog and your own domain. But if you are serious about blogging I definitely advise having at least your own domain. Why?
- A domain name gives you uniqueness.
- Having your own domain gives you credibility.
- It’s crucial for SEO.
- Your name will be more recognizable and you can use custom emails with your domain.
- It’s better for online marketing.
- You gain control of what people see when they search for you.
OK, now we all know how important is domain, what about self-hosting?
First, what does self-host mean?
It means that you don’t use a free service to run your blog or website. A self-hosted blog or website is one that resides on your own server, or most people, however, pay a third-party to host their blog or website. You don’t really own your eg Blogger blog with a free service. You do own the content you’ll write there, but the domain and the platform are properties of Google.
So, do you need your own domain and self-hosting or domain and free service (eg. Blogger, Tumblr, WordPress.com) will be enough? Its depend on you, what you prefer and what is important for you:
|Domain+free service||Domain + self-host|
|Ownership of the whole blog, not just content.||*|
|Full control over your blog.||*|
|Full control of customization of your blog.||*|
|Full access to analytic and marketing (eg running ads).||*|
|Almost no technical skills needed.||*|
