A copy is a very important part of every website. Even if you have amazing design, a copy is needed by all kinds of businesses in order to sell. It’s what will help your company stand out to get into the hearts and minds of customers.
Image and design don’t sell, they attract – good copy sells whatever you offer. So copy of your website is essential for your business.
What is a good copy? Usually, have 3 rolls:
#1 Attract
#2 Communicate your offer/product effectively
#3 Trigger Action (What do you want your visitors to do.)
In short: Good Website Copy attract new visitors, communicate your offer or product effectively so that visitors make the next step and do what you want them to do (subscribe, buy, call, enroll…).
How do you get a good website copy?
You can learn to write good copy or hire someone who knows how to write good copy. Simple, right? If you choose to hire, just be careful that every copy has your voice!
If you choose to write your Website Copy, then here are the steps and tips to do this:
1 | Write
The First step is to write the first draft. I suggest to try to write just like you speak and imagine that you speak to your ideal customer (hope you have one, if not check the post “Who is your ideal client?”)
2 | Fix, proofread, optimize
When you have your Website Copy ready, go true and fix parts that you don’t like and proofread. Try to be specific and clear. I prefer short paragraphs with titles, bold text so you can quickly scan a page and know what it is about.
Optimize your Website Copy for SEO (Search Engine like Google) – If you need I am also preparing Course for SEO, that will be available next week – don’t miss it – subscribe to my newsletter
3 | Test, test, test
Test if your website is consistently attracting the right people and the visitors to your website are consistently converting into leads and new clients.
Test with your friends and family if everything is understandable and easy to read. Website Copy is live think and should be changed regularly and improved over time.
Tips:
#1 Have a conversation with your customers
Write down words your customers use, write down questions and use both in your website copy.
#2 Create definitive calls to action (CTA)
To convert you have to add CTA! Even when you think that is logically what visitor should do – add CTA. Your content/services will convert better!
CTA examples: subscribe, buy, click to get this, send me an email to get started, contact me, enroll…
#3 Be nice and clear, don’t use words only pro uses
Try to imagine that you are in your customer shoes and use words that customers use. Don’t try to sound smart – rather be nice and use simple explanation (customer will trust you more).
